Jonathan Esperester

In his collage-like paintings, Jonathan Esperester is particularly interested in the materiality of the image. For this he tries, almost alchemically, to make the process visible on the canvas – different layers with different materials (oil, acrylic, airbrush, ink, varnish, Windowcolor, foil, etc.) are placed on top of each other and create a tension between imitated surface and spatiality.

In his surreal visual worlds he examines human perception and classification of reality – man-made categories such as „naturalness“ reflect for him an ambivalence that carries the enormous diversity of the world. The ambiguity of things becomes a metaphysical force that makes the everyday seem magical.
