Marc Rayner was born in 1959 in Wollongong, N.S.W. Australia.
Drawn to art as a child -as most kids are- he continued to flirt with the art world into his teens, but never really took it seriously until 1984. At this point he was accepted into a University level course (BFA) at the University of Tasmania. Majoring in Ceramics, 2d drawing, life drawing and painting.
After one year, financial hardship ended his degree course and he relocated to Melbourne on the mainland of Australia. From this point onward Rayner’s exploits into the art world would be autodidactic/ self taught.
Philosophy and process:
The integration and depiction of quasi, natural and urban landscapes, forms the spine of my social, historical and political imagery and commentary. These landscapes serve as the backdrop -and are often part of the narrative themselves- for my tormented and unfortunate characters.
Neo expressionism and abstract expressionism are my chosen genres at this stage. These genres suit my temperament and reflect the distorted paradigm in which we live.
