HONG KONG GALLERY

OVERView

Pageants, reality shows, slimming pills advertisements… So many things in modern society lecture us what defines a woman’s beauty and what not. Urged to define their own beauty, three European artists Maddalena Fanfani, Van Lanigh and Yana Medow paints up to tear down the hypocrisy of mass media. Informed by pop-art, surrealism, fauvism movements, they use bold colours and hyperbolic shapes as a rebel yell: Who is there to decide the beauty of mine but myself!?

Artists

Van Lanigh

Van Lanigh is a Russian artist based in the Netherlands. She had a tough childhood with abusive parents and made the first attempt to run from home when she was 7. Escaping from reality to the imaginary world assisted her to deal with anxiety. This developed into a strong spatial visualisation ability which helped her to become the youngest student in a local Art School. At sixteen she left home for the last time to start an artistic career and two years later moved to the Netherlands. Releasing her emotions into work connects realism and abstractionism through the lens of subconsciousness to achieve superconsciousness.

Maddalena Fanfani

Mad considers art as a way of thinking and acting in life, a constant reflection of what she sees and feels every day . Her works represent dreamlike landscapes and creatures. The sign of digging to unearth a fictional universe , which is struggling to remain within the canvas. In the world of Mad, everything takes the form of a splash of colour . The mind processes thoughts and memories that the hand imprints on the surface , through symbols and words. The design is a poem translated into her language.

Yana Medow

Yana Meadow is a Russian - Spanish artist based in Madrid. Yana Medow identifies the aesthetic direction of her oeuvre as figurative and primitive. She depicts people with exaggerated body proportions. This stylistic choice is driven by the goal of expressing the human body's universal grace, along with the comical naivety of human ideas, concepts, and thoughts. The soft, almost luminescent streaks of orange, lemon yellow, and turquoise blue contribute to the artworks' lighthearted mood.
